My Summer Plans

In addition to two fabulous vacations I have planned, the dates and locations of which I am not allowed to share until after the fact in the interests of safety and security, I will be working at several summer camps in the coming weeks.

Two of these camps are short English-only camps for students from all over Jordan that will be held close to popular tourist locations. At these I'll be teaching Drama and Environmental English in the mornings and try to stay cool in the upwards of 50 degree Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) heat in the afternoons. I should also find time before or after the camps to enjoy some of the amazing sites Jordan has to offer and I'll be sure to share pictures when I have them.

A third camp, I will be leading for a week in my village for 9th-11th grade boys from my school. This camp, focusing on critical thinking skills, is known as Brain Camp. I would love to describe it in more detail here, but I will respectfully defer to Thomas Friedman in his Sunday New York Times Op-Ed piece:

What are you interested in hearing about?

  5. Hi Craig,

My name is Elizabeth Buckner and I am a PhD Student in International Education at Stanford. One of my projects involves how we can use mobile technology to advance inquiry-based learning, and a Professor I work with at Stanford would like to do a short-term research project in a rural village in Jordan. I am going to be in Amman starting in September, but don't have any experience or contacts in rural villages, so I thought I would just search for PCVs (I had great luck visiting rural villages in Morocco with PCVs). I just came across your blog, and was wondering if you would be willing to email with me about the possibility of arranging a trip to a small village in Jordan in the first week of October.

I definitely don't want to impose on you -- but I thought that you might have some contacts who would be helpful, or just some practical suggestions for what we would need to carry out a project -- I can give you a lot more information by email.

    Here is my email: ebuckner@stanford.edu

    Thanks again!
